From Fiction and Fictional Settings Wiki

Is it possible to document non-original fiction (like movies or books?)

Hello there ! I was wondering if this wiki is dedicated only to original fiction, or if users may document fictional settings from existing sources, for example, Star Wars or Harry Potter?

--Solarius (talk) 02:10, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

good point.

My original vision of this wiki was—and presently still is—more for wikt:in-universe articles, with the Narration: namespace for narrations, and the Other: namespace for off-mission stuff—entries that'd parallel Mainspace Wikipedia articles, such as Other:Baybe (Musical Artist) or Other:CCP virus (I was a bit ticked at the CCP). I suppose we could come up with a namespace for wikt:out-of-universe articles such as Borderlands (w:Borderlands (series)) in time. Suggestions are welcomed.

Keeping licensing in mind (and thus not getting Miraheze into trouble), you are free to fork stuff over from sources such as Wikipedia or Wikisource wikisource:Category:Fiction—provided you have an interest in the content you are posting; and if people add canon stuff and their own versions in the in-universe mainspace articles here, such as, say, Skywalker and Leia not being siblings but half-siblings or 2nd cousins, one can create a section for such—I suppose one could have a "canon" section, Editor A (non-canon) version section, Editor B (non-canon) version section, and maybe Editors A and B (non-canon) version section—a kinda MPOV (Multiple POVs)—maybe see based on mh:allthetropes:mh:allthetropes:Star Wars/WMG for more ideas one might want to run with.

Thank you for answering and looking into the issue!
If it can help, here is the background behind this question: I love playing tabletop RPGs with friends, and I've recently discovered a game system that lets people play in virtually any fictional (or real) setting they want. So now I'm just looking for settings to play in ^^
And curiously enough I haven't found yet a wiki dedicated to summarizing fictional settings and why they are cool. There are Wikipedia and TV Tropes but they don't really put forward what's attractive about each setting.

My apologies for not replying sooner and thank you for your patience.

I'm thinking of maybe having either a namespace such as "Meta:" or "Epi:" or "Epi-:" for articles that describe other fictional stuff—i.e. indicating that they're fictional work.

Your entry Zemuria (Legend of Heroes: Trails) is fitting as a mainspace, as it's mostly in-universe, Though I'd change the

"Zemuria is the continent on which the Legend of Heroes: Trails series takes place (including Trails in the Sky, Trails of Cold Steel, and Trails of Reverie). All these games are JRPGs. It is a fantasy setting, set in the era of an industrial revolution. It explores the numerous and major changes brought by this industrial revolution, as well as the mysterious past of the world.":

taking out the

"All these games are JRPGs. It is a fantasy setting, set in the era of an industrial revolution. It explores the numerous and major changes brought by this industrial revolution, as well as the mysterious past of the world."

as it's out-universe—maybe put it in the talk page and/or have as an Epi-article.

Your article Star Wars also has some out-universe stuff, and of course there's the Wikipedia article (w:Star Wars) (and even rw:Fun:Star Wars). This search in AO3 brought me 3807 results—stuff that wouldn't be in the WP (or RW) article.

I'm increasingly thinking of using the categories for the talk pages when I eventually get around to posting my stuff where it seems appropriate: something like Category:Solar System seems suitable for the mainspace, whereas Category:Fictional locations in the real world and Category:Fictional settings might be more suitable for their talk pages.

At any rate, this wiki is still relatively new, or at least mostly unused for now and these past few years, and most of the rules haven't been established.

Thanks for your contributions.   :)   DMBFFF (talk) 06:25, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Adding Cargo extension to make infobox data semantic

Hey, DMBFFF! I was wondering if you would support going to Special:ManageWiki/extensions and enabling Cargo, so we can add dynamic data to tables we can pull up? --Stranger195 (talk) 00:29, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

Okay.   :)   DMBFFF (talk) 05:01, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

What if we add a logo for the wiki?

Hey, DMBFFF! I'm getting a bit tired of seeing the Miraheze flower on the left every time, plus it also makes it harder to distinguish this wiki from the Meta site (m:) or from other startup Miraheze wikis.

So I uploaded a book stock photo to File:Wiki.png, which is the wiki logo's filename as tradition for both Wikipedia and FANDOM, and to File:Favicon.ico.

Doing this configuration would make the logo change based on what image is uploaded to the "Wiki.png" and "Favicon.ico" file pages, meaning we can change the actual logo later.

  1. Go to Special:ManageWiki/settings#mw-section-styling
  2. Change both "Logo ($wgLogo)" and "Apple Touch Icon ($wgAppleTouchIcon)" to https://static.miraheze.org/fictionandfictionalsettingswikiwiki/b/bc/Wiki.png
  3. Change "Favicon ($wgFavicon)" to https://static.miraheze.org/fictionandfictionalsettingswikiwiki/6/64/Favicon.ico

What do you think?

Actually, I kinda like their logo.    :D
but yeah, we need one of our own. The books are okay; indeed, if you want, we might use one of your maps; another is FAFSW in some fancy font. I suppose the logo too will probably be a work in progress.

I have no problem with alt accounts, though my guideline-I'm-probably-going-to-make-into-a-rule is that no one should edit the mainspace, narration:, or poem: page an editor has created except either that particular editor, or whoever wikt:thon permits (except possibly glaring unintended typos, categorization, and even then), and of course wikt:thon's user page. I suppose the creator could put such permission into the talk page of such creations. As long as the user of the first account (i.e. you) doesn't protest the edits of the account you're currently using (i.e. you) of Media, I can easily let this slide; but the guideline/rule is there to protect your works from unwanted edits.    :)

A more professional main page?

I don't want to be too offensive, but that music video on the front page irks me, haha. What do you think of generally overhauling the entire thing with a more professional main page, like with a featured article and links to categories similar to Wikipedia's?

I also believe it would attract more people who won't see this as someone's sandbox anymore.

I'll try to make what I'm thinking of in Project:Sandbox

--MLastCelebration (talk) 12:11, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

not offended, there were times when it irked me too.   :D   but given that 6 December 2020 was the the 40th anniversary of his assassination, and that he'd have turned 80 last October, I thought I'd post his most popular (post-Beatle) song, and one I recently again developed an appreciation for. I intended it to be up for only a week or so.
It was/is my intention to touch up the Main Page. I'll be getting rid of some of those links and the 1st person style of writing. If you want to experiment—edit it and/or try a proposed revision on a subpage, or Project:Sandbox—fee free.
It's my intention to put this wiki and my newly gotten coversongswiki:Main Page MH wiki in the Gazetteer perhaps in late January/early February after I've uploaded a few of my stories, though given how well Media is developing, it might be sooner.   :)   DMBFFF (talk) 20:00, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Fiction

Can I create any kind of web fiction that I like on this wiki? Pasmorade (talk) 10:16, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

First of all, greetings.   :)

Second, pretty much, yes: as long as it's freely licensed, narration goes into "Narration:" space (e.g. "It was a dark and stormy night...,"), with the Main space for fictional articles (i.e. text about fictional things written in a style resembling Wikipedida). In the case of licensed stuff, IIUC IP (intellectual property) law might allow, say an article about w:Klingons, as long as you don't (too much) directly rip-off whatever corporate weasels who own the text and trademark. As, IIUC, Miraheze is on a British host, rules might differ slightly. But otherwise feel free to post stuff: the worse that will happen is that it might just might be deleted, much more probably altered and/or moved, and much more probably than that, nothing. DMBFFF (talk) 17:00, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
Also links to sources would probably be a good idea too. DMBFFF (talk) 17:14, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
